Biographical Text

Nellie Ó Cléirigh was born in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, and was educated at UCD. She attended embroidery classes at the Dublin School of Art and this stimulated her interest in the craft of lace-making and its history. She has a collection of old Irish lace which has been exhibited in Ireland and abroad and is well-known for her knowledge of Irish lace on which she has lectured, broadcast and written. She worked in the civil service in Dublin, where she opened a handicraft outlet. She now divides her time between Dublin and Valentia Island, Co. Kerry, where she runs a craft and curio shop. She has also written a history of Valentia Island.
