Biographical Text

Born in Carrick-on-Suir in 1951, educated there, in Waterford and in Dublin, where she studied journalism. Her first job was as a junior reporter with the Cork Examiner (1970-73), then she moved to The Irish Times. She went on to become Political Correspondent with The Sunday Tribune in 1980, the first woman to be appointed a political correspondent in Ireland. She then spent five years with The Sunday Press until her election to the Dáil as political representative for the Progressive Democrat party in 1987. Following a change in government she returned to The Irish Times where she was the Political Editor before being appointed Editor of the newspaper in 2002.
