Biographical Text

Born c.1770 (she is not entirely honest about her age) in Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary, the daughter of a prosperous clergyman. Her memoir/autobiography Retrospections tells the story of her failed love affair and subsequent madness. Her work, unpublished in its own period, also gives a very detailed account of the day-to-day life of a country parsonage, and the friends and family who form their circle. Her own title for the work was

Retrospections of an Outcast Or the Life of Dorothea Herbert Authoress of The Orphan Plays and Various Poems and Novels In Four Volumes Written in Retirement Volume the Fourth Adorned with Cuts.

The original manuscript is held in Trinity College, Dublin. This is her only extant work, published posthumously.
