Biographical Text

Theodora Fitzgibbon was born in London of Irish parents and was educated in Tipperary and Clare, before going to England, Belgium and France. She later spent time in India, America, France, Italy and Ireland. Her reputation rests on her cookery books, about twenty-four in all, variously titled Cosmopolitan Cookery, Weekend Cookery, The High Protein Diet and Cookery Book, Country House Cooking, The Young Cook's Book, Game Cooking, The Art of British Cooking, Eat Well and Live Longer.

She was also well-known through her weekly column in The Irish Times which she wrote for sixteen years. She wrote one novel, Flight of the Kingfisher (1967) which was dramatised for television. She recounted her life in two volumes of autobiography, With Love (1982) and Loves Lies A Loss (1985). She was a friend of Dylan and Caitlin Thomas while living in London and the first volume is dedicated to Caitlin and to the memory of Dylan, and Peter [Peter Rose Pullman] her partner during those years.
