Biographical Text

Sr. Helena O'Donoghue was born in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary in 1940 and entered the Mercy order of nuns in 1958. She attended UCD where she took the H.Dip. in Education (1966). She was a teacher and later principal of the girls' secondary school run by her order in Nenagh. She left teaching in 1976 to work in a lay community in Dublin, then moved to Shannon before being appointed Superior General of the Mercy Sisters in Killaloe in 1985. She was also President of the Conference of Major Religious Superiors in Ireland from 1989 onwards. She has written for religious journals and published Sisters in Transition. She is viewed by many as a progressive voice in Irish church life today.
