Biographical Text

Elizabeth Brennan was born in 1922 in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary and was educated in Blackrock, Co. Dublin. Her earlier work consisted of retellings of Irish legends in prose and verse as in The Wind Fairies. She later turned to novels, writing mainly light romantic and mystery fiction for which she received little critical attention. Her first novel, Out of the Darkness (1945) was described by a contemporary reviewer as "a promising first book." Several have been translated. One novel, Girl on an Island, won the Irish Countrywomen's Association Award in 1984. A recent compilation of creative writings based on articles written for the association's monthly magazine in the 1950-70 period includes four such articles attributed to an Elizabeth Brennan and are listed in the bibliography. Her later years were spent in Lecarrow, Co. Sligo.
