<text>Rosina Doyle was the daughter of Anna Doyle Wheeler (q.v.) and Francis Massey-Wheeler. She was born in 1802 when her mother has seventeen, on her father's estate at Ballywire, on the Limerick-Tipperary border. Following an unhappy and violent marriage, Anna Doyle Wheeler fled from Ballywire taking Rosina and her sister Henrietta with her, and they lived in Guernsey for several years. The Wheeler girls were educated in French and Italian there, and were later sent to school in Dublin and London when in their teens while their mother went to Caen to join the Saint-Simonian socialist group. Massey-Wheeler died in the 1820s, and in 1826, her sister, Henrietta, died of a wasting disease. We know that Henrietta shared her mother's politics, but little is known about Rosina's views. <br><br>Shortly after Henrietta's death, Rosina married the writer and politician Edward Bulwer, Lord Lytton, against the wishes of his family. Rosina's mother was also unhappy with the match, remarking that Lytton treated her daughter like a playful doll (Dooley, 1997:86). The couple had two children, Emily and Edward, but their marriage quickly degenerated into bitterness, and ended nine years later. Lytton figures as the villain in several of Rosina's novels, which she began to write following the breakup of her marriage. She is thought to have written twelve or more novels, the best-known of which is Chevely, or the Man of Honour (1839). Lytton's public reputation, contacts and influence enabled him to attack his ex-wife in the popular press. However, in 1857, Rosina Lytton made public her side of the quarrel by issuing the Appeal to the Justice and Charity of the English People (1857). Dooley tells us that this was timed to confront Bulwer Lytton just as he began his campaign to run for parliament, and set out the story of his abusive behaviour and philandering (Dooley, 87). In 1858, Rosina was kidnapped and illegally confined to an asylum by her ex-husband, in an effort to silence her. Although she was released after three weeks, incarceration in a nineteenth century asylum must have had a lasting effect on her. Rosina Lytton died in 1882, and two years later, her son Edward published a memoir which denigrated women's rights and defended his father's stance in the affair. Interestingly, Constance Lytton (1869-1923), Edward's daughter and Rosina Lytton's granddaughter, went on to become a prominent feminist and member of the Women's Social and Political Union.</text>

<text>Best known for The Suir from its Source to the Sea (1912), Laura McCraith was an early historian of her native Tipperary. She was born in 1870 at Loughloher House, outside Cahir, where her ancestors had settled in the early 18th century. The McCraiths were well-known landowners and magistrates in that part of the country, and her father was a captain in the Tipperary Artillery (Walsh 175).<br>She travelled extensively, and in 1900, she married Dr.John Henry Blakeney. They moved to Cheltenham following his posting there in 1909, but frequently travelled back and forth between there and Cahir, and maintained an active interest in her native place. For example, she and her husband donated a silver chalice to St.Paul's Church in Cahir in 1915. At the outbreak of World War I, she was a member of the St.John's Ambulance Brigade, and the superintendent of a nursing division. In 1915, she was appointed Commandant of the St.Johns Voluntary Hospital for soldiers in Cheltenham. Walsh tells us that McCraith was friendly with Rev. William P.Burke, who wrote History of Clonmel while working as a curate in Cahir. The two compared notes on their writing, and shared sources on the history of the area. In Cashel of the Kings (1923), she acknowledges Canon Burke's involvement in her research (176). In addition to her works of local history, McCraith also contributed to periodicals such as The New Ireland Review, on issues as diverse as suffrage, tourism, and Irish music. Little is known about her later years. [L.M.McCraith]</text>

Fuair Seosaimhín a cuid meanscolaíochta i Scoil Loreto, agus ghnóthaigh sí BA sna Nuatheangacha ó Choláiste na hOllscoile, Baile Átha Cliath. Chaith sí tamall ag múineadh i gCo. Mhaigh Eo, agus ansin sa chlochar i nDúrlas Éile, Co. Thiobraid Árann. Bhí sí páirteach i gConradh na Gaeilge agus i gCumann na mBan i mBaile Átha Cliath agus i nDúrlas Éile.<br><br>Bhí sí geallta le Piaras Mac Cana, ach cailleadh é siúd sa bhliain 1919. Phós sí James Mac Neill cúig bliana níos déanaí, deartháir le Eoin Mac Néill, an scoláire mór go raibh baint aige le bunú Chonradh na Gaeilge. Chaith James cúig bliana ina Ard-Choimisinéir ag an Saorstát i Londain, agus ansin fuair sé post mar Phríomh-Ghovarnóir na hÉireann sa bhliain 1928. Bhí rialtas Fhianna Fáil, 1932-1948, go mór i gcoinne oifig an Phríomh-Ghovarnóra, agus briseadh Mac Neill as a phost.<br><br>D'éirigh Seosaimhín gníomhach i gcúrsaí polaitíochta. Thug sí tacaíocht do Chlann na Poblachta agus chuaigh sí go dtí an Háig mar Aire na hÉireann sa bhliain 1950. Ba é an chéad uair a tugadh a leithéid de phost do bhean in Éirinn. Chuir sí suim sa cheol agus san ealaín agus bhí baint aici le Bantracht na Tuaithe. D'aistrigh sí Finnsgéalta ó India go Gaeilge; ba é an t-aon leabhar amháin léi a foilsíodh. Bhain sí céim mhúinteoireachta amach agus thosaigh sí ag taisteal timpeall an domhain. Chaith sí tréimhsí ag taisteal i Meiriceá agus san Eoraip, stop sí in Éirinn i 1992, agus phós sí fear ó Ros Cré, mar a bhfuil sí ina cónaí fós. Chaith sí roinnt ama ag obair sa tSeapáin agus chuaigh sí thar n-ais go dtí an Astráil cúpla uair. Ghnóthaigh sí céim MA san Oideachas le déanaí. Foilsíodh leabhar amháin léi, beathaisnéis mhná ó Thiobraid Árann, Daisy Bates, a d'oibrigh i measc na ndaoine dúchasacha san Astráil, agus aistríodh an leabhar seo go Gaeilge.

Elisabeth Monkhouse was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1970 and spent most of her childhood travelling with her family. After taking a teaching degree she set off to see the world and having travelled through America and Europe she stopped briefly in Ireland in 1992 where she married a man from Roscrea where she still lives. She has spent some time working in Japan and made several trips back to Australia. She has recently completed an MA in Education. Her only published work is a biography of a Tipperary woman, Daisy Bates (q.v.), who worked among the Australian aboriginal peoples, which has been translated into Irish.</text>

<text>Saolaíodh i mBaile Átha Cliath í agus tógadh i mBaile an Bhóthair í. B'as Co. Thiobraid Árainn a hathair agus as Co. an Chláir a máthair. Seisear a bhí sa chlann. D'fhreastail sí ar mheánscoil na nDoiminiceach i gCnoc Síon, An Charraig Dhubh, Baile Átha Cliath agus ghnóthaigh sí céim sa Nua-Litríocht ón Ollscoil Ríoga. I gcoláiste i gCearnóg Mhuirfean a d'fhreastail sí ar ranganna toisc go raibh cosc ar mhná a bheith i láthair ag léachtaí i gColáiste Bhaile Átha Cliath ag an tráth sin. Bhuaigh sí scoláireacht trí bliana sa Léann Ceilteach agus ceapadh í mar Ollamh le Gaeilge in Ardscoil Mhuire, Domhnach Broc, Baile Átha Cliath. Ghlac sí páirt ghníomhach in imeachtaí Gaelacha de gach saghas. Dhein sí an-chuid oibre ar fud Bhaile Átha Cliath, idir mhúinteoireacht agus riarachán. Bhí baint aici le bunú Chumann na Scríbhneoirí i 1921. Bhí ról aici sa dráma Casadh an tSúgáin a léiríodh in amharclann an Ghaiety sa bhliain 1901. Bhuaigh sí duaiseanna Oireachais dá haistí sna blianta 1902 agus 1908 - tá an tarna haiste i gcló in Irisleabhar na Gaeilge (1909). Chuir sí cumann camógaíochta ar bun do chailíní i mBaile Átha Cliath. Phós sí Seán Mac Gearailt, státseirbhíseach ó Bhaile Deasumhan, Co. Chiarraí sa bhliain 1906 agus bhí iníon amháin acu, Niamh, a chuaigh le haisteoireacht nuair a d'fhás sí aníos. <br><br>Scríobh sí na drámaí a leanas sa tréimhse 1902-1911:Gleann na Sidheog, An Dúthchas, Sidheoga na mBláth agus Cois Abhann Araglainn, a léiríodh i 1911 ach nár foilsíodh. D'aistrigh sí Scéalta Ó Ghrimm go Gaeilge. Thug sí spreagadh do Pheig Sayers scéal a beatha a insint chun go ndéanfaí é a thaifeadadh ar phár agus chuir sí Peig agus Machtnamh seana-mhná in eagar. Is dráma do chailíní é Cáit Ní Dhuibhir (1938) agus foilsíodh An Cochall Draoidheachta sa bhliain chéanna agus Scéal an Tí i 1952. Cuireadh aistí, léirmheasanna agus aistriúcháin léi i gcló idir 1903-1935 sna hirisí An Claidheamh Soluis, Banba, An Branar, Misneach, The Irish Rosary, St. Stephen's agus Ar Aghaidh. Chaith Máire agus a fear céile na blianta ag cur fúthu i nDeilginis, Baile Átha Cliath. Cailleadh í sa bhliain 1967 (Breathnach agus Ó Murchú Beathaisnéis 2 78-79). Agus í ag tagairt do Mháire Ní Chinnéide, deir Nic Eoin "thug sí an-chúnamh go deo do Pheig agus í i mbun a dírbheathaisnéise" (215). D'aistrigh sí an dá dráma Dúbhairt sé Dábhairt sé agus Nuair is Cruaidh do'n Chailligh ó Fhraincis go Gaeilge. Léiríodh iad i 1916 (Ó Siadhail 53).</text>

<text>Rugadh i Lancashire Shasana í i 1952 agus d'fhás sí aníos i nGaeltacht Chorca Dhuibhne ó aois a cúig bliana. Máinlia ab ea a hathair agus bhí sé gníomhach i gConradh na Gaeilge. Dochtúir ab ea a máthair leis, as Fionn Trá, Corca Dhuibne, Co. Chiarraí. Bhí cónaí uirthi freisin in Aonach Urmhumhan, Co. Thiobraid Árainn ar feadh tamaill. D'fhreastail sí ar Choláiste Samhraidh Merriman i 1969 agus chuaigh freagra Sheáin Uí Ríordáin ar chaint Mháirtín Uí Dhireáin i gcion go mór uirthi. Bronnadh BA sa Ghaeilge agus sa Bhéarla uirthi i gColáiste na hOllscoile, Corcaigh (1972) agus dhein sí an tArd-Teastas san Oideachas san Ollscoil chéanna (1973). Bhí baint mhór aici leis an iris Innti agus í ina mac léinn. D'oibrigh sí mar mhúinteoir, chaith tamall thar lear sa Tuirc agus san Ollainn, phós sí an geolaí Dogan Leflef agus d'fhill ar Éirinn (Ó Cearnaigh 151-152). Bhí sí ag cur fúithi i nGaeltacht Chorca Dhuibhne sna hochtóidí luatha, agus shocraigh sí síos i mBaile Átha Cliath ansin lena fear céile agus a gcuid páistí. Bronnadh D.Phil. honoris causa uirthi ó Ollscoil Chathair Bhaile Átha Cliath i 1995. Tá dhá thréimhse caite aici sna Stáit Aontaithe mar scoláire sa Léann Éireannach, ag Boston College (1999) agus ag Villanova University (2001). <br><br>Is mar fhile atá cáil bainte amach aici, agus seacht gcnuasacht filíochta léi i gcló. Tá a cuid filíochta aistrithe go Béarla agus go seacht teanga eile (Uí Nia 39). Oibríonn sí i gcomhar leis an aistritheoir ar uairibh, cé gur i nGaeilge amháin a chumann sí féin (Ó Cearnaigh 152). D'aistrigh Michael Hartnett an fhilíocht go Béarla sa leabhar Rogha Dánta / Selected Poems, chuir daoine éagsúla na haistriúcháin ar fáíl do Pharaoh's Daughter agus Paul Muldoon a bhí i mbun aistrithe maidir le The Astrakhan Cloak. Is minic a bhaineann sí tairbhe as an mbéaloideas ina cuid dánta (Ó Cearnaigh 152). Ní thugann Nuala neamhaird ar an gcluais agus í ag scríobh. Is minic a dheineann sí a cuid filíochta a reic go poiblí (Ó Cearnaigh 152) agus cuireadh amach Spíonáin is Róiseanna i bhfoirm téipe (Uí Nia 38).
Born in Lancashire, England in 1952, daughter of a veterinary surgeon and a doctor, Nuala grew up in the West Kerry Gaeltacht, her mother's birthplace, and in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary. While studying for a BA in Irish and English (UCC 1972) and a HDip in Education (1973) she published poetry in the journal Innti. She attended the 1969 Merriman Summer School was impressed by Seán Ó Ríordáin's reply to Máirtín Ó Díreáin's speech. She married the geologist Dogan Leflef, with whom she lived in Holland and Turkey for some years. In the early 1980s, they returned to Ireland (Ó Cearnaigh 151-152) and lived in West Kerry before settling in Dublin with her husband and her children. <br>One of the best-known poets of the period, she published seven collections of poetry from 1981 onwards. Her work also appears in many journals and anthologies, and has been translated into English and several other languages: writing only in Irish, she has however actively assisted a succession of translators who include several distinguished contemporary Irish poets. She enjoys a wide international reputation which far exceeds that of most Irish-language writers. A gifted oral presenter of her work, she has given bilingual readings far and wide. She has also written children's plays and a libretto, and essays and articles - including the important "What Foremothers?" (1992) and "Why I Write in Irish" (1995) - given published interviews and co-edited the anthology Jumping Off Shadows: Selected Contemporary Irish Poets (Cork UP, 1995).<br>Celebrated both at home and abroad, she has won many prizes, has spent two periods in the United States as a student of Irish Learning, in Boston College (1999) and in Villanova University (2001), and has been awarded an Honarary D.Phil. (Dublin City University 1995). She is a member of Aos Dána, of Poetry Ireland and of the IWU. Her work appeared in a number of anthologies, collections and journals including the Field Day Anthology of Irish Writing Vol. 3 (1991), Ireland's Women (1994), The Comic Tradition in Irish Women Writers (1996), Cultures of Europe: The Irish Contribution (1994), New York Times Books Review (8 Eanáir 1995), Ireland of the Welcomes (September-October 1996), The Southern Review, Irish Review, 14 (Fómhar 1993), The Celtic Pen (Fómhar 1993), Krino (Winter 1993). Interviews with Nuala are published in Graph, No. 1 (1986), An Nasc, 3, 1 (1990) and Sleeping with Monsters: Conversations with Scottish and Irish Women Poets (1990).<br>From the 1980s, Ní Dhomhnaill emerged as a figure of increasing cultural importance. Rooted linguistically and imaginatively in ancient traditions of literature and folklore, her poetry nonetheless decisively inhabits Irish post-modernity. It combines a vigourously feminist character with sexual openness, and also conducts a continuing dialogue with Jungian visions of selfhood. Engaging in a dialectical, interrogative relationship with gender roles in Irish traditional ideology, it sets inherited images - such as the murúch or mermaid figure - against a sceptical urban milieu, and explores women's desire as an emphatic force. Darkly depressive, humourously bawdy, often delicately lyrical, the poems draw brilliantly upon the extensive body of Irish oral traditions; Ní Dhomhnaill added systematic study of this material to her own experience of Gaeltacht cultural life. Both in her work, and in her cultural impact as a figure of compelling charm and formidable imaginative energy, Ní Dhomhnaill makes vital links for post-modern Ireland between past and future. Her vision of possible femininities is original in negotiating the binaries which have sometimes confined Irish women poets of her generation and before. In its playful grace, intense feeling, and depth of reach into tradition, her poety is an inimitable contribution both to women's writing and to Irish literature in general.</text>

Táilliúir ab ea a hathair. Tugadh an chraobh d'Áine i gcomórtais éagsúla amhránaíochta ag feiseanna áitiúla. Bhí sí ag dul lena haintíní, Máiréad agus Síle Ní Ailgheasa, a raibh cáil orthu cheana mar amhránaithe. D'oibrigh Áine mar mhúinteoir i mBealach (idir Crois an Ghúlaigh agus Dún Droma, Co. Thiobraid Árann) agus i gCnoc an Bhile timpeall na bliana 1906, agus bhí ainm oide dhíograisigh uirthi. Chuaigh sí isteach sna mná rialta am éigin idir 1910-1914. Is i mBéal Átha Ragad agus i gCallainn, Co. Chill Chainnigh a bhí sí lonnaithe agus í mar bhall de Shiúracha na Trócaire, agus bhí sí ina huachtarán ar an dá chlochar ar feadh tréimhsí áirithe. <br><br>D'ullmhaigh sí téacsleabhar do ranganna a cúig agus a sé, Leabhar Ghobnatan, a foilsíodh don gcéad uair i 1930. Scríobh sí roinnt drámaí ar éirigh go maith leo i gcomórtais an Oireachtais, mar shampla Bean Sí agus Bean Tí, agus Coisc na Mná Feasa (1941). Bhuaigh sí duais Oireachtais eile sa bhliain 1946 ar scéal do dhaoine óga. Meastar go mbíodh drámaí dá cuid á gcraoladh ar Raidió Éireann. Bhí úrscéal tosnaithe aici sular cailleadh í (Breathnach agus Ní Mhurchú, Beathaisnéis 5 164-165). [Bean Dubh an Ghleanna, Carraigín na mBláth, An tSiúr M.C.]</text>

Bhí an teist ar a hathair gur shármhúinteoir Gaeilge é. Chuaigh Áine go dtí Clochar na Trócaire, Dún Garbhán agus go dtí Coláiste na hOllscoile, Corcaigh mar ar bhain sí BA amach sa Ghaeilge. Chuir sí suim sa cheol agus san ealaíon. Mhúin sí i gClochar na Trócaire, Dún Garbhán, agus i ndá bhunscoil áitiúla, ach briseadh as a post í ar chúiseanna polaitiúla. Bhí ag teip uirthi post eile a fháil agus é beartaithe aici dul ar imirce nuair a bhuail sí le Séamus Ó Néill. Phósadar i 1917, agus chuaigh siad chun cónaithe go dtí Caiseal, Co. Thiobraid Árann. Ní raibh aon pháistí acu. Oileadh Séamus mar mhúinteoir, ach chaill sé a phost tar éis imeachtaí 1916, agus chaith sé tamall i bpríosúin éagsúla. D'oibrigh Áine mar mhúinteoir i dTiobraid Árann ag an am, agus bhí baint mhór aici le Cumann na mBan. Chuaigh a fear céile isteach sna Gardaí Síochána tar éis bhunú an stáit nua, agus chaith an lánúin tréimhsí ag cur fúthu i mBaile Átha Cliath, i gCuan Bhaile na Cúirte agus i gCathair Saidhbhín, Co. Chiarraí. Ní raibh Áine ar fónamh ar feadh na mblianta sular cailleadh í. I gCathair Saidhbhín a d'éag sí agus is sa Rinn a adhlacadh í.<br><br>"Ba í an banfhile Gaeilge í ba mhó ar a raibh aird an phobail roimh 1940" (Breathnach agus Ní Mhurchú, Beathaisnéis 2 105). Foilsíodh cnuasach filíochta amháin léi Idir na Fleadhanna agus cnuasach scéalta do leanaí, .i. Brosna. D'aistrigh sí ceithre dhráma le an Athair Gaffney go Gaeilge freisin (Breathnach agus Ní Mhurchú, Beathaisnéis 2 105-107). "Cúrsaí pearsanta agus cúrsaí na hÉireann lena linn féin ab ábhar do na dánta". Bhíodh dán dá cuid ar chúrsa na hÁrdteiste, .i. 'An Chraobh Chrom'. (Ó Góilidhe, Ardteistiméireacht Díolaim Filíochta 396-397), agus ceann eile ar chúrsa na méanteiste, 'Dréachtín' (Ó Góilidhe, Duanaire na Meánteistiméireachta 229).<br>Cuireadh an dán dár líne tosaigh ''Om luascadh, 'om luascadh' i gcló i ndíolamaí difriúla: Fíon na Filidheachta (Breathnach 1931), An Bhláithfhleasc Bheag (Ní Áinle 1934), 150 de Dhuanta Gaedhilge (Ó Súilleabháin 1936).<br>(de Hae agus Ní Dhonnchadha 103, 85, 193).
