<text>Born in Thurles, Co. Tipperary, Kavanagh moved with her family to France when she was quite young,. Her father, Morgan Kavanagh, was a poet and philologist. The insight she gained into French life and character was faithfully portrayed in many of her works.

She moved to live in London in 1844 at the age of 20, where her writing career began with a series of essays for periodicals of the day. Madeleine (1848), the story of a peasant girl of Auvergne, established her reputation, later built-on by her historical and biographical works, such as: Women in France during the Eighteenth Century (1850), and French Women of Letters (1862). Consisting of about twenty novels, her work had a wide circulation in the USA and England, as well as in France. Tynan says of her literary reputation: "All Miss Kavanagh's books have passed through several editions, and most of them have been published in America where she was a favourite".
Her best-known works are Nathalie (1850), described by Tynan as "one of the best stories of French life probably ever written by an English hand", Madeleine, Daisy Burns (1853), and Rachel Gray (1856). In 1853, she toured the Continent, revisiting France and travelling through Switzerland and Italy, after which she wrote A Summer and Winter in Two Sicilies (1858). On the whole she led a quiet life, caring for her invalid mother. Living in Paris at the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian war, she moved to Rouen, and then to Nice, where she died aged fifty-four. Her final collection of short stories, Forget-Me-Nots (1878) appeared posthumously.</text>

<text>Molly Keane was born Molly Skrine in Co. Kildare in 1904 into an Anglo-Irish family. Her mother, Moira O'Neill, was a poet and the author of 'The Songs of the Glens of Antrim'. Molly was educated at home until the age of fourteen when she was sent to a boarding school in Bray, Co. Wicklow. Because of her unhappy childhood she went to live with family friends, the Perry family of Woodruff House in Co. Tipperary. It was here that she met her future husband, Bobby Keane, and also John Perry who worked with her on several of her successful plays in London.

She wrote her first novel, The Knight of Cheerful Countenance, when she was seventeen in order to supplement her dress allowance. This was published in 1926 by Mills and Boon, then not exclusively the publishers of romances. She wrote steadily through the 1920s and 30s under the pseudonym M. J. Farrell (which hid her identity as well as her gender) and also wrote plays, many of which were written in collaboration with John Perry and directed by John Gielgud. Her husband died in 1938 and after the failure of one of her plays, Dazzling Prospect, she returned to Ireland in 1961 to raise her two daughters. In 1981, after twenty years of silence, she wrote Good Behaviour and had it published under her own name. It was short-listed for the Booker Prize and also made into a television serial. She wrote two later novels, Time after Time (1983) and Loving and Giving (1988) as well as a cookery book called Nursery Cooking (1985). As a result of her second string of successes in later life, many of her earlier novels were reprinted by Virago publishers. She spent almost forty years living in Ardmore in Co. Waterford where she took an active interest in community affairs and was also instrumental in furthering the writing careers of Clare Boylan, Jennifer Johnson and Tom McCarthy. She was elected to Aosdána in 1981.

[Mary Nesta Skrine; M.J. Farrell]</text>

<text>Mary Isabel Leslie or "Temple Lane" as she is better known, was born in Dublin, 1899, but grew up in Tipperary - her father was the dean of Lismore. Educated in England, and at TCD, where she took a doctoral degree in literature, winning the 1922 Gold Medal. She published poetry in magazines and journals, but it is for her novels that she is best-known, and she was very prolific. She used a pseudonym (possibly because of her father's position in the church) which was based on the name of a street near her publishers.

Her works include Fisherman's Wake (1940), Curlews (1946), The Little Wood (1930), which won the Tailteann Gold Medal, and Friday's Well (1943) which was adapted for the stage by Frank Carney. Callaghan notes that she is remembered for her poem "The Fairy Tree" which was set to music by Dr.Vincent O'Brien (Hogan 680).

She also published critical material on the work of other women writers, such as Teresa Deevy, Kathleen Nott, etc. She was a friend of both Lady Gregory and Elizabeth Bowen, and Austin Clarke encouraged her writing. Callaghan describes her work as "female fiction before the Liberation", pointing out that she also may have been the author of Mills and Boon novels under the pseudonym "Jean Herbert" (Hogan 680). She is buried at St.Cathage's Cathedral, Lismore. [Mary Isabel Leslie; Jean Herbert]</text>
