<text>Una Troy was born in Fermoy, Co. Cork but moved to Clonmel when her father was appointed a District Justice in 1922. She was educated in Dublin. The family spent their summers in Bonmahon, Co. Waterford, where Una met Joseph C. Walsh (1894-1969), a medical doctor. They married in 1931, living in Bonmahon briefly, before moving to Clonmel. They had one daughter. Having written poetry in her teens, she began her publishing career in 1936, using the pseudonym "Elizabeth Connor". Her first novel, Mount Prospect, was published in England in 1936 but was banned in Ireland. Her second novel, two short stories and four plays written for the Abbey in the 1940s were written between then and 1947, all under the same pseudonym. Her plays were possibly better -known than her other writing during this period. She shared the the Abbey prize competition for new playwrights with her play Mount Prospect, a three-act tragedy. This was produced by Frank Dermody with the stage setting designed by Anne Yeats. It ran for twelve performances at the Abbey and had a week's run at the Cork Opera House.<br>Una Troy ceased to publish for a period from 1947-1955 when she resumed her publishing career again with We Are Seven (1955), this time using the name "Una Troy". She wrote a further fifteen novels, a short story and co-wrote a film script She Didn't Say No based on her 1955 novel. Her novels, set in rural Waterford, were very popular during the 1950s and 60s. Published in England and the USA, her novels were translated and some were serialised (the Irish Independent serialised The Brimstone Halo in 1965). Her short stories were published in The Bell, Ireland Today and the Kilkenny Magazine. When her husband died in 1969, Una moved to the summer house in Bonmahon where she resided until her death in 1993.<br>Two of Una Troy's sisters were also involved in the arts. Her youngest sister, Shevaun (1923-1993), was a poet (q.v.), and their sister, Gráinne (1913-1970), who taught at the Sedgely Park Training School in Manchester throughout her life, published some musical compositions in the 1930s.<br>Note: Ann Butler has compiled a bibliography of Troy's work, which is held by the National Library of Ireland.</text>

<text>Daughter of a small landowner from Clonmel, Marguerite Power had an interesting and varied career. Her childhood was dismal, due to her father's violent temper. He was regarded as a traitor to the Catholic cause as a result of his efforts to put down the '98 rising in the area. Forced by him to marry at the age of fifteen, she fled from her violent husband, Captain Farmer after three months, returning to live with her parents. Farmer's military career ended when he drew a sword on his commanding officer in a quarrel - he was allowed to resign and friends shipped him to the East Indies. He returned to England in 1816, and died after a fall from a window ledge at Fleet Prison during a drunken party. By that time, his widow had left Ireland for London, residing first in the fashionable Manchester Square, and then later at St.James' Square, where she soon earned a reputation as a famous hostess. Her biographer asserts that her conduct after the separation was beyond reproach, which suggests that there were rumours of indiscretions.<br><br>In 1818, a few months after Farmer's death, Marguerite married Charles John Gardiner, Earl of Blessington. Their shared tastes were extravagant, and his estates heavily in debt. They went abroad in 1822, visited Byron in Genoa, and lived on the Continent until Blessington's death in 1829. The Count d'Orsay travelled with them, first as a friend, and then married the Earl's daughter. Following the Earl's death, this marriage broke up, and the Count set up home next-door to Lady Blessington in London, their relationship causing scandal for many years.<br>After her husband's death, she supplemented her considerably reduced income by writing novels, and contributing to various publications as author or editor. The Idler books were popular for their gossip, anecdote and sentiment. Her novels seem to have mainly consisted of fictionalised accounts of the lives of the aristocracy, as Tynan points out: "Lady Blessington introduces to her readers the leading representatives of art, literature, politics [...] whom she has received as friends or met in society" (Cabinet of Irish Literature vol.4). She also edited The Keepsake and The Book of Beauty for several years, as well as contributing sketches and articles to other periodicals of the day. Despite her large earnings, she went bankrupt and fled to Paris in 1849, where she died of apoplexy.</text>

<text>Daisy O'Dwyer's origins are a little obscure - she tells us herself that she was raised by grandparents in Roscrea, Co. Tipperary, but other accounts suggest that she may have grown up in an orphanage. She is best known for her life and travels in Australia. She emigrated to Townsville in 1883, working first as a governess on a North Queensland cattle ranch, and then she married a stockman Edwin Henry Morant in 1884. Kelly tells us that her husband was the famous "Breaker Morant" executed by a British firing squad during the Boer war - when Daisy met him he was a flamboyant horseman and womaniser, and their marriage barely lasted a year (Kelly 119-120). Daisy then married Jack Bates, another tough cattle man, in 1885, and they had a son, Albert. Jack Bates taught Daisy how to survive in the outback, but again, this marriage was not a success. Leaving Jack, Daisy travelled widely throughout Australia, staying with friends as she moved about. <br><br>She was financially ruined in the economic crash of the 1890s, and left for England, leaving her son with his father. She lived with a cousin in Ireland, and following an introduction to W.T.Stead, began to write articles for Review of Reviews and the Pall Mall Gazette. She moved to London and lived in a women's hostel, and although her lifestyle conformed to the New Woman stereotype, she was no fan of these early feminists. When she recovered some of her lost money, she paid her fare back to Australia. En route, she travelled with a Catholic priest who worked with Australia's indigenous tribes, and this was the origin of her interest in recording the languages and customs of those tribes. <br><br>Bates was reunited with her son, but less than twelve months later set off on her travels again - this time for Australia's north west coast. Her first visit to the Trappist Mission in N.W.Australia is recounted in The Passing of the Aborigines (1938). She went on to study the Koolarrubulloo tribes while living at Broome, and later lived with the Bibbulmun tribe near Perth for two years. <br><br>By the late 1890s, Bates was a recognised authority on Australian aboriginal tribes, she gave lectures to the Royal Geographical Society and was consulted by anthropologists. She understood the importance of place, and kin, to these tribes, and came to be known as Kabbarli, the Grandmother, to the natives of Shark Bay. In 1910, she was appointed as a travelling protector to the aborigines on an expedition with Radcliffe Brown, Australia's first professor of anthropology. He intended to study the habits of a variety of tribes, but Bates was necessary to the expedition as she had already built up links with these tribes, and she was trusted by them. Their trip was a controversial one, and Bates accused Browne of stealing and plagiarising her notes.<<br><br>In-between her long spells of living in the bush, she and Jack lived together on his ranch at Glen Carrick, but they finally separated in 1912. In the 1920s she wrote for Mee's Children's Newspaper and the Australasian. However, her best-known work, based on her life's work, was The Passing of the Aborigines (1938). Much of her research remains unpublished.</text>

<text>Elizabeth Brennan was born in 1922 in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary and was educated in Blackrock, Co. Dublin. Her earlier work consisted of retellings of Irish legends in prose and verse as in The Wind Fairies. She later turned to novels, writing mainly light romantic and mystery fiction for which she received little critical attention. Her first novel, Out of the Darkness (1945) was described by a contemporary reviewer as "a promising first book." Several have been translated. One novel, Girl on an Island, won the Irish Countrywomen's Association Award in 1984. A recent compilation of creative writings based on articles written for the association's monthly magazine in the 1950-70 period includes four such articles attributed to an Elizabeth Brennan and are listed in the bibliography. Her later years were spent in Lecarrow, Co. Sligo.</text>

<text>Hester Cooke was born in Waterford, and spent her early childhood at Moyglass, near Fethard, Co.Tipperary. Her father was a Church of Ireland clergyman, Canon Alfred Cooke, who became the rector of Carrick-on-Suir where she was to live for twenty-eight years. Her uncle, W.C.Cooke was a UCC lecturer in Spanish, and he provided his niece and her brother Hewitt with gifts of books, mostly natural history books, as the children were deeply interested in this subject. Thus, she grew up with a love of the Irish natural landscape, which is reflected in her poetry. Her brother, to whom she was devoted, went away to Aravon school at twelve, followed by Sandhurst and a career in the army. Cooke remained unmarried, and following her mother's sudden death in 1932 she lived at home with her father, taking on many of the tasks which had been done by her mother in the church. <br><br>Her recently-published memoir, Rectory Days, gives an autobiographical account of her life, and illustrates the excitement occasioned in Carrick by a letter from Hewitt, who spent many years posted in Burma. While he travelled all over the East with the army, she led a quiet life at home preparing food parcels for the families of ex-army men, reading and writing poetry. She wrote many articles for local newspapers and periodicals, frequently relating to the natural world, and her poems appeared in the Blarney Magazine. She published three collections, all of which she prepared for publication on a Remington typewriter brought back from Burma. Her correspondence reveals that she wrote at some length to Temple Lane once or twice a year. She comments: "She and I have much in common and we both draw our sword against Philistinism!!" Her publication, The Mountain Road, contained tributes to President Roosevelt and General Eisenhower which Cooke sent to the two men and an undated press clipping of the period indicates that these tributes were placed in the libraries of Eleanor Roosevelt and General Eisenhower. <br><br>Her brother died of a tropical disease in Malta in 1954, and her father in 1958. Cooke then moved to Cathedral Close in Waterford, where she died in 1986.</text>
